Third-Year Intensive Japanese

Equivalent to JAPAN 311, JAPAN 312, and JAPAN 313. Prerequisite: minimum grade of 2.0 in either JAPAN 213 or JAPAN 234. Offered: S.

Class description

This course will cover the eintier book of "An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese" except chapters 2, 7 and 10. The course covers the same materials and contents that would be covered in the one-year series, Japan 311-312-313.

Student learning goals

Speak more naturally in a vraiety of situations.

Increase the number of kanji you can read and write. (About 200 characters each)

Comprehend authentic reading materials, both prose and expository.

Express your thoughts and opinions in prose writing and in speaking.

Deepen your understanding of Japanese culture through class discussion and reading.

Select appropriate speech styles, considering formality and gender, in a variety of situations.

General method of instruction

Grammars are explained in lectures in the first two periods of the day, then the next two periods will be used to practice the langauge/grammars taught that day. We will be using Japanese exclusively throughout the day.

Recommended preparation

Purchase the textbook, workbook and course packet as soon as possible and start working on the vocabulary and kanji. Spend considerable amount of time each day to do the homework and memorizing the vocabulary and kanji. Form a study group to practice conversations in Japanese. Listen to the textbook CD multiple times each day.

Class assignments and grading

Mainly writing and listening assignments from the workbook and textbook.
