Advanced Syntax and Composition

Prerequisite: either ITAL 203 or ITAL 234.

Class description

In this course emphasis is placed on learning how to analyze and understand the function of each grammatical element within a more complex syntactical discourse. An important object of this course is the tremendous amount of vocabulary, including idiomatic expressions, that students will acquire.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

The course is totally in Italian. Students will learn how to analyze and read grammar from a real text and context. They are required to read a novel and identify, analyze and present to the class all aspects of the language present in each chapter of the novel that pertains to the level of the class.

Recommended preparation

Read carefully and try to understand as much as possible of the assigned material. Follow the weekly instruction given by the instructor. Attend regularly and show enthusiasm and motivation.

Class assignments and grading

Students are responsible for reading the individual chapters of the grammar textbook and the novel researching linguistic aspects present in the chapters of the novel, preparing for oral presentations and writing. Write summaries of individual chapters as well as short essays on the novel.
