Southeast Asian Activism and Social Engagement

Investigates how Southeast Asian activism is tied to the histories of political struggle within Southeast Asia and to questions of diasporic Asian American identity. Engages in group research projects exploring the meaning of social activism within local communities. Offered: jointly with HIST 367; Sp.

Class description

This course will compare the histories of Vietnam and the Philippines as they relate to colonialism, nationalism, revolution and diaspora. It will ask about the differences and similarities between these two nation-states. It will also inquire into the history of their respective diasporas in the United States, and examine the extent to which their histories have shaped the engagement of Vietnames Americans and Filipino Americans in the politics of both the US and their respective countries of origin.
