Class description
This course will explore the ways in which Japanese, Chinese, and Korean scholars and statesmen engaged the concepts of nation and civilization within the contexts of regional and global intellectual currents at the turn of the twentieth century. Readings will include primary sources in English translation and a variety of secondary research concerning such figures as Fukuzawa Yukichi, Yoshino Sakuzo, Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao, Yu Kilchun, and Sin Ch'aeho, among others.
