Class description

The course will trace the historical development of Japanese foreign policy from the mid-19th century to the present day and examine the major theoretical approaches that have aimed to explain Japan?fs changing role and place in the global economy. This course places special emphasis on the domestic sources of foreign policy and asks to what extent domestic political institutions, economic structures, and social groups can help us account for the patterns of Japanese foreign policy.
