Field Course in Chinese History: Pre-Sung Period

Introduction to the English-language literature on Chinese history through the Song dynasty. Recommended: either HSTAS 452 or equivalent.

Class description

Students can expect to gain a good understanding of the English language scholarship on the Tang and Song periods.

General method of instruction

This class will involve discussion of readings that everyone has done plus presentations by students of works they have read that others have only skimmed.

Recommended preparation

HSTAS 452 or equivalent

Class assignments and grading

Oral presentation of two reviews of books or articles and a 15 page bibliographical essay.
