Examines special topics in American history.
Class description
The American South from the Revolution through the Civil War: This course will explore the history of the American South from the era of the American Revolution through the Civil War, from a successful revolution to one that met defeat. There will be considerable attention to the diversity of people and changes over space and time as the South expanded.

Class time will be divided between lecture, small group work analyzing primary documents, and general class discussion.
Recommended preparation
Class assignments and grading
Two papers of 3 to 4 pages each. Midterm exam and final exam. Regular and careful reading of assigned books. Active participation in class discussion and group work analyzing documents.
