Class description
This class will explore some of the really big questions in history: Why did empires rises in some places rather than others? What accounts for the size and durability of civilizations? What can we attribute to technology? To geography? To ideas?

Class assignments and grading
Students are expect to read the assignments each week and also write two papers. The short paper is a 4-6 page analysis of an article in world history. The long paper is an 8-10 page research paper on a topic of their choice.
