Europe and the Modern World

Political, economic, social, and intellectual history of modern Europe. Cannot be taken for credit toward a history major if HSTEU 302 or 303 previously taken.

Class description

A survey of European history from the 17th century to the present. Emphasis will be placed on reading and analyzing primary sources.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

The course is based on daily lectures and course readings. Students will read a collection of primary sources, along with a novel and two memoirs. There is no required textbook for this course, though an optional one will be recommended.

Recommended preparation

No prerequisites.

Class assignments and grading

A midterm examination, a final examination, two in-class essays.

1st in-class essay 10% Midterm 40% 2nd in-class essay 10% Final 40%
