Class description
This course provides students the opportunity to develop their skills in each of reading, writing, speaking, and listening beyond the level attained in second-year (intermediate) Hindi.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
Different methods of instruction are used as appropriate to individual skills. Techniques employed in class incluss grammar and situational conversational drills, free conversation; reading and translation; dictations, and formal grammar lectures.
Recommended preparation
Students wishing to enroll in Hindi 401 need to have completed the equivalent of two years of formal instruction in Hindi at the college or university level. Students should have worked in detail through one of the standard grammar texts for the language. A thorough familiarity with the Devanagari writing system and the ability to write simple Hindi prose are presupposed.
Class assignments and grading
Assignments include prepared readings, memorized conversations and vocabulary, and composition in Hindi.
Written homework assignments; written and oral tests; final examination; spoken performance in Hindi; dictations; and overall class preparation.
