Students, working in teams under the supervision of individual faculty members, review relevant literature, pose research questions, design and conduct studies, and present the results in papers prepared either for submission to a professional journal or for presentation at a professional conference. Class description
Students, working in teams under the supervision of individual faculty members in different faculty run research groups and they partake in actitivities such as reviewing relevant literature, posing research questions, designing and conducting studies, and presenting the results in papers prepared either for submission to a professional journal or for presentation at a professional conference. Faculty research groups vary in their learning goals and outcomes, as well as assignments (see more below). Listed below is a set of goals and outcomes from many recent research groups.
Student learning goals
Learn how to review current literature.
Become a consumer and critical reader of current literature.
Design and prototype software.
Study users in multiple settings.
Evaluate current technologies.
Become proficient coders.
General method of instruction
Group study with faculty member.

Class assignments and grading
Activities and assignments vary by research group and faculty members but often include: literature reviews, reading seminars, technology evaluations, prototyping, coding, usability studies, data analysis, designing and presenting conference presentations, article and report writing, proposal writing, etc.
Each credit of work is worth three hours of input. Faculty assign grades based on time input and quality of output.
