Class description
Modern Dialects
This course deals with the basic phonology, morphology and syntax of five contemporary West Germanic languages and dialects. We will examine one southern dialect (Swiss German), one central (the dialect of Frankfurt) and one northern German dialect (Plattdeutsch). Then, time permitting, the basic structure of Yiddish and Dutch will be examined. Short reading selections from each of these speech communities will be exegeted, and CD's of native speakers reading passages from our texts will be made available to the class for home study.
