Barocke Herrscherdramen (Gryphius, Lohenstein)
Im 17. Jahrhundert kommt es nach den verheerenden Reli¬gions¬kriegen zur Errichtung einer stabilen politischen Ordnung in Europa, die im Zeichen des Territorialstaates und des abso¬lutistischen Fürstentums steht. Vor diesem Hintergrund sind die Herrscher¬dramen des Barock als dezidiert politische Experimentalanordnungen zu verstehen. Sie fragen nach der Legitimität der fürstlichen Vollmacht, nach dem Ver¬hältnis von staatlicher Gewalt und aufrührerischer Gegengewalt, von Recht und Rache, Absolutismus und Tyrannei. Im Kern geht es immer wieder um ein Problem: nämlich um die Figur der Inkorporation des Staates in der Person des Regenten und um die daraus resultierenden Kon¬flik¬te zwischen Leidenschaft und Staatsräson. Das Seminar soll in genauen Textanalysen, die dem Ver¬ständnis- und Über¬setzungs¬widerstand der barocken Trauer¬spiele Rechnung tragen, folgende Dramen behandeln: Andreas Gryphius, 'Leo Armenius', 'Carolus Stuardus', 'Catharina von Georgien' und 'Papinian' (alle im Reclam Verlag); Daniel Casper von Lohenstein, 'Sophonisbe' (Reclam) und 'Agrippina' (Werkausgabe; wird in einem Reader zur Verfügung gestellt).
Baroque Tragedies (Gryphius, Lohenstein)
In the 17th century, after devastating religious wars, a stable political order is established in Europe, dominated by the territorial state and the absolute monarchy. The baroque tragedies considered in this context are decidedly experimental political orderings. They raise questions about the legitimacy of princely authority, the relationship between state violence and rebellious counterviolence, between law and revenge, absolutism and tyranny. At the core is always a single problem: the incorporation of the state in the person of the ruler and the resulting conflicts between passion and claims of the state. The seminar will deal with the following dramas, (relying on close text analysis which takes into account the resistance of Baroque tragedies to comprehension and translation): Andreas Gryphius, „Leo Armenius“, „Carolus Stuardus“, „Catharina von Georgien“ and „Papinian“ (all available from Reclam Verlag); Daniel Casper von Lohenstein, „Sophonisbe“ (Reclam) and „Agrippina“ (will be available in the form of a reader).
