Studies in Nineteenth-Century Literature and Culture

Rotating special topics in literature and culture of the nineteenth century, such as particular movements, authors, genres, themes, or problems. Recommended: GERMAN 303; either GERMAN 311, GERMAN 312, GERMAN 322, or GERMAN 323.

Class description

NARRATIVES OF 19th CENTURY REALISM: FROM LATE ROMANTICISM THROUGH REALISM This senior lecture/discussion course serves as an introduction to a number of timeless works in German prose and poetry from late romanticism through realism by German, Austrian and Swiss creative writers such as Eichendorff, Hoffmann, Kleist, Büchner, Grillparzer, Stifter, Keller, Storm, and Meyer. Particular attention will be given to narrative styles, to poetic forms, to literary devices (such as the motifs, metaphors, symbols, etc.) and to the significance of the works' philosophic contents. The canonical literature under scrutiny here will also be viewed as German, Austrian and Swiss 19th century cultural manifestation
