GERMAN 390, Section B Spring 2008: Film and Opera Instructors: Eric Ames and Jane K. Brown
This course explores the rich interrelations between film and opera: how opera contributes to the shape, plots, and visual luxury of film, the ambiguous status of both as high and low culture, the competition between image and voice in both media, the relations of time and space in both.
Student learning goals
Students can expect to learn about opera as a theatrical form, about the musical stage at the turn of the 20th century, films of operas, films based on opera, films that reflect on opera, and the ties between opera and cartoon animation.
