Class description

What is Society? Introduction to German Social Theory

The exchange between European and American intellectual traditions has very much shaped 20th century social theory. This course will be dedicated to readings of major German-speaking sociologists and philosophers from the 19th century to today. This will include texts by Hegel, Karl Marx, Ferdinand Toennies, Georg Simmel, Max Weber, Max Adler, Theodor W. Adorno, Juergen Habermas, and Niklas Luhmann. In addition to the question of what society is, this course will focus on theories of the differentiation of modern society, and on questions of conflict, and of integration.

Recommended preparation

Primary texts will be read in German, so good reading knowledge is required. English translations will however be available where possible. The language of instruction will mainly be German.
