Conversational practice in small groups based on films. Because series progresses through the year, beginners may enroll only Autumn Quarter. May be taken concurrently with other Germanics courses. Cannot be taken for credit if GERMAN 250 previously taken.
Class description
Participants will develop facility in elementary to intermediate conversational German through developing their listening and speaking skills. Reading is confined to study of vocabulary. No written work in German is required.

General method of instruction
Participants watch episodes from the graded film series "Guten Tag" and break up into small groups to discuss the films in German under the guidance of "proctors" (native speakers or advanced students of German), who lead them in discussion of the films by asking content questions based on the films followed by discussion of more general as well as personalized themes.
Recommended preparation
No preparation required in fall quarter; one quarter of college German or one year of high school German required for enrollment in winter quarter.
Class assignments and grading
Students must study vocabulary in order to participate fully in discussion groups.
Students are graded on the basis of their participation in the group discussions and weekly quizes consisting of multiple choice questions relating to projected slides taken from the films followed by a vocabulary test.
