Introduction to Geography

Introduction to the study of human geography and the major themes of the discipline. Topics include: human-environment interactions, migration and human mobility, patterns of health and nutrition, industrialization and urbanization, and the geography of culture and politics. Offered: AWSpS.

Class description

Human Geography is less a specific body of knowledge than an integrative and critical way of looking at the world. This course introduces you to that way of thinking. We focus on global, regional, and local scales. We will study economic, political, and cultural restructurings at these scales. We examine these themes through current problems such as the deindustrialization, environmental justice movements, geopolitical conflict, and the culture wars in particular places around the world.

Recommended preparation

Students should attending lectures and labs. They should also keep up with the weekly reading assignments.

Class assignments and grading

Developing an original research paper, with drafts of portions due throughout the quarter.
