Supervised Study in Selected Fields

Special supervised study in a field represented in the College of Arts and Sciences. Faculty supervisor required. Credit/no credit only. Offered: AWSpS.

Class description

Research Exposed! (GEN ST 391) offers the undergraduate an opportunity to learn about current, exciting research in a wide variety of disciplines, including the process of discovery, how faculty come up with an idea for research, how inquiry is structured in the different disciplines, and how students can become involved in the knowledge-making process. Made possible by the Odegaard Undergraduate Library and Learning Commons , the Undergraduate Research Program, and Undergraduate Academic Affairs.

Student learning goals

know how to begin research and find a faculty mentor

understand and appreciate what research looks like in various disciplines

understand ethical issues in research

gain a better awareness of the breadth of research questions possible in research

General method of instruction

Panel presentations by UW faculty focus on specific issues such as ethics and the culture of research. Students attend weekly, fifty-minute presentations and have the opportunity to ask the speaker questions following each presentation. There is a discussion board students are asked to post to at least once per quarter. There is a final quiz on the last day of lecture that asks questions about the Professors' lectures. This course may be repeated for credit (1 credit/quarter-3 quarters max); speakers and topics will vary.

Class assignments and grading

credit/no credit. Students must complete the final quiz with 7 out of 10 questions correct and participate in the course discussion board at least once throughout the quarter
