Research Methods in Aquatic and Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences

Comprehensive survey of the theory and techniques of field research in aquatic sciences. Topics emphasize sampling design, data collection, and interpretation across a broad suite of topics and approaches. Field trips and laboratory sections are mandatory.

Class description

Students will learn to use the spreadsheet EXCEL; will learn the use and limitations of typical research sampling gear used in fisheries; will have input into the sampling design of two field projects (one FW, one SW); will do the collecting and analyzing of the data from the two field projects; and each student will write a draft (returned with instructor's comments), and final, fisheries technical report on each of the two field projects.

Lectures 3X/week, field and lab projects/experiments, 2 afternoons per week.

Recommended preparation

A real interest in fish and fisheries research.

Class assignments and grading

About three chapters of back-up reading per week for the lectures; some same-day lab assignments (exercise completed and handed in before leaving lab); two project reports (technical/scientific papers) requiring first a draft which is critiqued by the instructors but no grade assigned, and then a rewritten final technical report that is handed in for a grade.

Midterm Exam covering lecture/lab = 15% Final Exam covering lecture/lab = 25% Field/Lab Attendance/Exercises/Projects = 60%
