Phenomena of the lower atmosphere: some simple applications of the principles of classical thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and radiative transfer to the atmospheric hydrological cycle, global energy balance, and atmospheric dynamics and climate. Prerequisite: ESS 414 .
Class description
The course is intended to be a broad survey of the atmosphere. It is particularly useful for Earth Scientists who do intend to use, but not specialize in, the Atmospheric Sciences.
We will cover a basic introduction to the atmosphere and climate, including weather forecasting, large scale atmospheric dynamics, radiation, and climate change.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
Mainly lectures and homework assignments. If there is interest and time allows there will be computer lab exercises, analyzing and interpreting climate data. Class presentations and weather discussions.
Recommended preparation
No previous knowledge about the atmosphere will be assumed. Although the subject is unavoidably quantitative, Math requirements are not fiendish. Some basic calculus will be used. Basic physics and thermodynamics will be useful. If in doubt, contact me for more information
Prerequisite: ESS 414 or equivalent.
Class assignments and grading
Classroom topics will be expored further in homeworks, and a midterm. A term paper (including presentation) will also be set.
33% term paper, 33% midterm, 33% homework
