Introduction to Epidemiology

Class description

Epidemiologic methods for non-epi majors. This class focuses on research designs and methods to describe measures of disease occurrence and risk factor associations, and uses quantitative and biomedical information to infer whether causal relationships exist between potential causes (risk or protective factors) and diseases in populations. How chance, bias, confounding and effect modification act to influence the interpretation of these potential associations is central to the overall goal. While specific diseases are used as examples, there is no attempt to provide detailed epidemiologic description of any disease or condition, the focus is on research methods.

Student learning goals

1. To describe, define and apply concepts of disease transmission and occurrence as used in epidemiology;

2. To recognize appropriate data sources for epidemiologic study;

3. To define, recognize and apply appropriate research study designs (descriptive and analytic) and to understand their individual advantages to answer specific types epidemiologic questions;

4. To define and apply measures of disease occurrence to solve problems and design studies;

5. To define and apply measures of association and/or excess risk to solve problems and critique/design epidemiologic studies;

6. To define and understand the role of chance, bias, confounding and effect modification in the evaluation of causal associations and how they might be addressed and interpreted in the design and analysis of epidemiologic studies;

Lecture, class discussion, homework, tests

Recommended preparation

Introductory Biostatistics or similar statistics background is advised but not required. Keep an open mind, eat sensibly, get plenty of rest, avoid drugs and alcohol, exercise daily and be nice to people.

Class assignments and grading

Performance on tests, homework other assignments and participation in class are all assigned points. There are a total of 500 points possible.
