Senior Seminar

Seminar study of special topics in language and literary study. Limited to seniors majoring in English.

Class description

English 498A + English 491B = a capstone service-learning seminar for English majors, taught by English Department faculty member and Community Literacy Program Director Elizabeth Simmons-O'Neill. If you are considering a career in teaching or any field working with children and young adults, want to work in partnership with "high needs" K-12 students and their teachers, believe literacy is a form of social action and want to put that belief into tangible form, or are looking for a small interactive learning community here on campus, this is an ideal capstone experience.

In English 498A students will meet twice weekly on campus (MW 1:30-3:20) in a writing-intensive capstone seminar focused on learning effective methods of working with public school students, exploring some central challenges and opportunities for public education, supporting K-12 students in developing their skill and confidence as writers, and using writing and presentation to inquire into, develop and communicate your thinking about these issues. English 498A includes research instruction and revision conferences with the instructor, and writing projects designed to develop your skill in articulating your learning in applications for internships, jobs or graduate school.

In English 491B (C/NC; 1-3 credits) you will put what you learn on campus into action, volunteering (4-5 hours a week, on a schedule you arrange) at a "high needs" partner public school. Contact the instructor if you are already volunteering at a public school and would like to know if your current volunteer position might continue as your site for English 491B. English 491B will appear on your transcript as an internship, may be used toward the field work requirement or as an elective in the Education, Learning and Society Minor, and provides documentation of school-based experience needed for application to Teacher Education programs.
