Byron, Shelley, Keats, and their contemporaries.
For AUTUMN 2003: An examination of poetry and some prose by selected writers of the "second generation" of English Romantics. The focus will be on the two most popular English poets of the early nineteenth century, Lord Byron and Felicia Hemans, and their contrasting tones and themes. Works by Percy Bysshe Shelley, John Keats, and others will also be studied. Assignments will include an essay, a memorization exercise, a group project involving political cartoons from the Romantic period, and a take-home final. Strictly regular attendance is essential and active participation in class discussion expected.
