ENGL 197
Seattle Campus

Class description
ENG 197 is the writing link for ENG 202, in which you should be enrolled simultaneously. Thematically, this composition course works in conjunction with your ENG 202 course; ENG 202 provides a broad range of approaches to language and literature, while the writing link applies those approaches to composition.
In this course we will examine some preliminary early American Puritan and Quaker texts in conjunction with writings about gender and sexuality from the 17th century through the 19th century; these readings will help us develop insightful, argumentative essays that matter in academic contexts. The reading and writing assignments confront the issue of sex/sexuality and religious experience together in order to ask questions about the roles of gender, body politics, and religion in the development of America as a nation. ENG 197 and ENG 202 work side-by-side as each course provides unique tools and approaches that will help your critical thinking, communication, and writing skills.
Reading and writing assignments are broken up into three sequences: (1) First-hand religious experience of the body; (2) Poetry of the body; (3) Slavery and the body.
