Study and practice of good writing; topics derived from reading and discussing stories, poems, essays, and plays. Cannot be taken if student has already received a grade of 2.0 or higher in either ENGL 111, ENGL 121, or ENGL 131.
This course is designed to help first-year college students develop a portfolio of writing that reflects an ability to write papers with complex academic claims. In the student-centered classroom, you will work closely with your peers and me to acquire skills of reading literary texts, formulating logical arguments, and composing academic essays. You will be asked to engage with a specific set of literary, historical, and theoretical texts, to participate actively in class discussions, and to critically examine issues related to the topic of the course: American short stories. In ENGLISH 111, I define myself more as a facilitator than as an instructor. While you are encouraged to formulate your own argument in response to class reading and discussions, through group work and peer review sessions, we will approach difficult texts together and help one another revise academic writings in conversation with these texts.
