ENGL 101
Seattle Campus
The second course in an academic writing sequence for non-native speakers of English, focusing on improving accuracy at the word, phrase, and sentence level, and across phrase and clause boundaries. Instruction provides repeated exposure to and engagement with practical formal vocabulary in academic contexts. ENGL 100, 101, and 102 must be taken consecutively. Offered: AWSpS.
Class description
Students will learn how to respond in writing to six types of writing assignments: summary of a short article; definition of a term; comparing and contrasting two things; cause and effect;describing data in a table or graph; writing about a problem and offering a solution. The focus of the course will be on writing grammatically accurate sentences.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
The instructor will outline the basics of each type of writing. This will be followed by practice of the style in class and in homework assignments. Finally, a quiz will be given, followed by feedback on the students errors. This pattern of instruction will be repeated for each type of writing, with repetition of preceding types of writing on each quiz. By the end of the quarter, students will have practiced the six types of writing numerous times. Throughout the course, there will be in-class discussion on common grammatical errors.
Recommended preparation
Students should come on Day 1 of the course, prepared to start working immediately on homework assignments. Students will get important feedback on each assignment, and will have to study the feedback in order to correct their errors. Students who do not do all the assignments, who do not study their feedback, and who do not attend class daily cannot expect to pass this course.
Class assignments and grading
All assignments are writing assignments and will be due the next day, OR sometimes the instructor will ask that the assignments be turned in on e-mail before a certain time. The length of each assignment will be one to two paragraphs. The assignments will be graded on 4 areas: accuracy of information, grammatical accuracy, coherence (grammar and vocabulary play a role in this), and appropriate style.
Everything in this course will be graded including work done in class each day. Full points will be given for completing assignments and quizzes, and for doing the daily classwork. At the end of the quarter, all the student's points will be added up.
Passing or failing this course is based on the final exam. A student must pass the final in order to pass the course. The final grade will be based on whether the student passed or failed the final exam, and on how many points were earned throughout the quarter.
