Survey of various qualitative research methods from a variety of disciplinary perspectives (anthropology, sociology, applied linguistics, cognitive psychology, policy analysis, and evaluation) with intensive experience in collection, analysis, and reporting of data. Prerequisite: EDPSY 586/EDC&I 578; second-year doctoral standing and one course in statistics. Offered: jointly with EDC&I 579; Sp.
Class description
Foundational and hands-on knowledge in using qualitative research methodologies in a variety of applied social contexts.

General method of instruction
Short lectures, engaging classroom exercises and demonstrations.
Recommended preparation
Must take EDPSY 586 in Autumn quarter.
Class assignments and grading
Short paper - and the write up of an empirical research project. This course follows a "learn-by-doing" format. Participants learn qualitative methods by conceptualizing and carrying out a small-scale qualitative study.
