Special Topics in Higher Education

Readings, lectures, and discussions pertaining to significant topics of special and current interest to educators. Focus is on issues related to education in community colleges, four-year colleges, and universities. Topics vary.

Class description

Students will learn how to conduct empirical research in education using large-scale data sets. Typically known as secondary analysis, this class will teach students how to work with numerical data, how to ask an original research question, and how to answer it using those data.

General method of instruction

Hands-on, intensive computer-aided seminar. We will meet in a computer lab each day and work with data.

Recommended preparation

Basis Statistics, knowledge of e-mail and a willingness to work with computers.

Class assignments and grading

Written, worksheets, and on-line assignments.

Quality of research conducted, evaluations of written work, quizzes, and examinations.
