Studio course in folk dance and social dance forms. Topics vary, and may include salsa or swing. Prerequisite: one year of previous dance experience.
Class description
Spring 2008: This course will offer instruction in a variety of swing dance styles, including East Coast swing, lindy hop, and West Coast swing. Students wishing to lead should register for section A. Students wishing to follow should register for section B. Sections will meet simultaneously.
Student learning goals
Learn step patterns of several basic steps in a variety of swing styles.
Learn techniques of leading and following.
Learn how to improvise in response to breaks in the music.
Gain some understanding of the historical and cultural context in which these dances developed and are practiced.
Develop kinesthetic awareness in how to use the body for communication and expression.
General method of instruction
Studio course.
Recommended preparation
None. Some background in dance is a plus, but not required. Just bring a willingness to learn and interest in new things.
Class assignments and grading
Assignments are predominantly in-class partnered dance activities, with a few reading and writing assignments and one outing to a dance club required.
Grades are primarily based on class participation and progress. Some writing assignments and outside projects will also be included in the final grade.
