Ballet Technique I

Beginning-level technique. Development of basic ballet technique and terminology. Prerequisite: Dance 108.

Class description

This class offers instruction in the continued development of beginning ballet technique, vocabulary and theory.

Student learning goals

Have an increased awareness of proper body placement and alignment within the framework of ballet technique.

Expansion of one's knowledge of ballet movement, vocabulary and terminology.

Skills in rhythmic and musical phrasing.

Development of ballet technique as a means towards self-expression.

Tools that will enable you to watch and enjoy dance performances on a deeper level.

General method of instruction

This is a movement course where the instructor will be modeling, saying and using musical phrasing to share and demonstrate knowledge of classical ballet technique.

Recommended preparation

Dance 101, Dance 102 or at least one year of ballet technique training is necessary to progress in this class. Also, a love of movement, expression and a willingness to learn will enhance your experience.

Class assignments and grading

You will be required to attend two dance performances and write a brief reflection of your experience.

Grades will be assigned based on participation, attendance at performances and progress over the quarter.
