Literature and Film

The film as an art form, with particular reference to the literary dimension of film and to the interaction of literature with the other artistic media employed in the form. Films are shown as an integral part of the course. Content varies.

Class description

This class is a broad general introduction to the study of film.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

Lectures, accompanied by the screening of classic Hollywood films, a few more recent films, and a number of foreign art films.

Recommended preparation

Students should be on a general level of readiness for any 300-level Comparative Literature or English course.

Class assignments and grading

An in-class midterm; a short paper; a long take-home final.

Midterm: 25%; short paper: 25%; take-home final: 50%
