Comparative approach to literature and a workshop in writing comparative papers in English. Emphasis on cross-cultural comparison of literary works. Readings in English with an option to read selected texts in the original languages Offered: AWSp.

Class description

In this course, we will be reading novels, short stories and plays on the theme of female transgressions and improprieties. We will focus on the ways in which these works deal with concerns such as marrying and raising children, dealing with social roles and duties to others, discovering sexuality, developing selfhood. Throughout the course we will address a variety of questions: What versions of femininity are presented in these works? How do they undermine or sustain expectations and stereotypes? What do these works say about masculinity? What impact do class and age have on female identity? How can a woman achieve self-fulfillment in a world defined by male concerns?
