Class description

GRANT PROPOSAL PRACTICUM This course is designed to develop student skills in grant-writing, project development, and project management for projects of all sizes that target sustainability goals. Specifically, students will create and present a project proposal targeting sustainability goals.

The course will use as its model the Campus Sustainability Fund grant program (, but will also explore other grant programs with a similar focus. The course will also connect students with faculty, administrators, practitioners, and other students currently involved in varied sustainability efforts at the UW and beyond.

Student learning goals

Students will gain experience planning and developing a high-quality project proposal to be submitted for grant funding.

Students will practice communicating a project to potential funding sources.

Students will complete a project proposal and presentation, which then could be submitted in partnership with a campus unit (faculty, staff, registered student organization) to the CSF Committee to request funding for the project.

Students will apply their environmental literacy to real-world problems and translate their understanding into successful project proposals that address existing needs.

General method of instruction

Experiential learning (proposal development and presentation), guest speakers and discussion panels, workshops, and as little lecture as possible.

Recommended preparation

This class will not focus on idea generation, but instead will focus on building the skills needed to develop an idea into a successful project. Students should come prepared with project ideas or topics or be willing to develop a project proposal based on an already-identified need.

Class assignments and grading

(1) Draft Letter of Intent (LOI) for a project proposal that addresses environmental sustainability goals. (2) Draft project proposal for a project that addresses environmental sustainability goals. (3) Presentation of project (10 minutes or less) to the class and other members of the public.
