Interviewing principles and practices, with emphasis on information gathering, selection, and persuasive interviews. Purposes and types of interviews, structure of interviews, and influence of communication patterns on interview outcomes.
Class description
This course will cover both theory and practical skills pertaining to the art of skillful interviewing. There will be units on research interviews, job interviews (from the perspective of applying for a job and also from the hiring perspective), informational interviews, and journalistic interviews. We will cover how to process interview data, and you'll learn about transcribing and preparing executive summaries and reports. You'll also learn how to prepare interview schedules, tips for conducting cross-cultural interviews, and how to conduct interviews in online settings.
