Literature before Ch' in. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.
Class description
This course will introduce the literature of the pre-Qin, Han, and Wei-Jin Nanbeichao periods through readings in original texts and secondary scholarly works.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
Students are expected to read in class the assigned readings. Attention will be given to grammar, vocabulary, and ways of translating literary Chinese.
Recommended preparation
To enroll in this course students must have completed one year of classical Chinese. Ability to use Chinese-Chinese dictionaries or Chinese-Japanese dictionaries. Undergraduates may enroll with permission of the instructor.
Class assignments and grading
1. Preparing to translate and discuss in class selections of Chinese literature.
2. Readings on the history of Chinese literature from a handbook prepared by the instructor.
3. The writing of a term paper or annotated translation.
