Class description
This seminar for the Autumn quarter of 2005 is devoted to the topic of Field Method, focusing on the linguistic investigation of Southern Chinese dialects -- how to acquire phonological, lexical and syntactic information systematically in both a diachronic and a synchronic perspective within a short period of time.

General method of instruction
General introduction to methodology; Demonstration of field survey by instructor with one native speaker; Field survey by individual students with the native speaker on a chosen topic; Discussion and summary.
Recommended preparation
Prerequisites: successful completion of CHIN 544 -- Dialectology[general]; familiarity with IPA transcription.
Class assignments and grading
Individual field survey carried out in class on a chosen topic; Compilation of bibliography on the dialect selected for field work in class; Written report of individual survey of a chosen aspect of the selected dialect [including phonetic transcription a la IPA].
