Recommended preparation
CHIN 342 or 442 ("The Chinese Language") and CHIN 542 ("Introduction to Chinese Historical Phonology"). Students must have a solid understanding of the methods and materials used for reconstructing Middle Chinese phonology, and a basic understanding of phonetic notation and principles of sound change. Students uncertain about their preparation should consult the instructor.
