General Chemistry

Covalent bonding, chemical kinetics, liquids and solids, properties of solutions, the elements in groups 1A-4A, the elements in groups 5A-8A, transition metals and coordination chemistry, and organic chemistry. Includes laboratory. Prerequisite: a minimum grade of 1.7 in either CHEM 152 or CHEM 154. Offered: AWSpS.

Class description

Molecular orbitals and orbital hybridization. Reaction rates, activation energy, catalysis. Properties of solids, liquids, and solutions: relation to bond type. Specific chemistry of elements by periodic column: Main-group elements (s and p blocks); Transition metals (d block). Introduction to organic chemistry and biochemistry.
