Special Topics in Civil and Environmental Engineering

Special topics in civil and environmental engineering offered occasionally by permanent or visiting faculty members.

Class description

In recent years, traffic detectors have been intensively deployed in major highway systems across the country. These sensors generate tremendous traffic data that are extremely valuable for traffic management, forecast, and control. How to manage the data efficiently and produce the most useful information out of them has been a big challenge faced by traffic profesionals.

The objective of this class is to introduce modern concepts, algorithms, and tools for transportation data management and basics of transportation analysis. Major topics of this course include: (1) Database design and management; (2) Data sharing, management, and analysis tools (Microsoft SQL 2000, Excel, Access, FrontPage, etc.); (3) Fundamentals of transportation data analysis; (4) Data exchange format (XML); and (5) Data mining and fusion technologies.

Student learning goals

General method of instruction

The course is a combination of lectures, readings, demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and projects. Two lectures per week. Hands on exercises at the TransNow computer lab.

Recommended preparation

Get familiar with SQL, SQL server 2000, Microsoft FrontPage, Microsoft Access, and SPSS is greatly helpful.

Class assignments and grading

Written assignments and projects using data management and analysis tools.

There are two midterm exams and no final exam. The scheduled final exam time will be used for final project presentations.

Grading: - Midterms: 40% - Assignments: 20% - Projects: 40%
