CEE 524
Seattle Campus
Lateral earth pressure theory. Design of temporary and permanent retaining structures including in situ reinforcement. Prerequisite: CEE 523; CEE 527.
Class description
Students can expect to learn a variety of topics on lateral earth pressures and earth retaining structures/systems. These include codes and laws regarding design and construction of earth retaining systems, detailed lateral earth pressure theory, detailed design methodology of commonly used earth retaining structures, general design methodology of infrequently used earth retaining structures, and in class discussions of cases studies and homework assignments.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
General method of instruction is lecturing but includes in class discussion of case studies and homework assignments.
Recommended preparation
Prerequisits for the course should include CEE 522 and CEE 527, but the class can be taken with permission of the instructor.
Class assignments and grading
The first few weeks of homework assignments cover the theoretical aspects of lateral earth pressures. The remaining assignments are design problems of earth retaining systems of actual projects in and around Seattle.
Homework, in class discussion and a final exam or project (TBD).
