Weekly discussions of past and current scientific literature in conservation biology, reviews of the state of the field, and presentation of research results. Discussions may cover the full breadth of the discipline or focus on selected topics. Graduate status required, or permission of instructor for undergraduates.
Class description
In Autumn 2005, we will investigate the ecological footprint of Biology, while learning what kinds of choices lead to the greatest gains in the ecological sustainability of our actions.
Student learning goals
General method of instruction
Students will together define the areas of investigation, and then select sections to work on independently, reporting weekly to the group. Together the group should come to an estimate of the ecological footprint of the Department of Biology.
Recommended preparation
Ability to ferret out information and analyze complex problems.
Class assignments and grading
Readings, literature and web-based research, short presentations to the group, posting of conclusions to group website.
Clarity of writing and completeness of research. Active participation is critical.
