Business Advantage

Four-week integrative course which focuses on business basics -- finance, accounting, marketing strategy and human resources. Team-taught by faculty experts using case discussions, lectures, and student presentations. Not open for credit to students pursuing a Business degree.

Class description

This is the perfect course for nonbusiness students who want to minor in business or "beef up" there business skills before they go on the job market. This course is intensive and goes from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for one month. You get 10 credits, can take it for a letter grade or for credit, no credit. You will learn • Understand and communicate using appropriate business terminology. • Have an updated and viable resume for job searching and be equipped with skills to interview well • Possess a working knowledge of finance, accounting, marketing, leadership, and strategy. • Have increased their knowledge about potential employers from business cases, company visits, executive speakers, and interactive social events. • Conduct a business analysis of an existing firm. • Be able to analyze an enterprise's competitive strategy (cost leadership, differentiation and focus). • Read and analyze financial and income statements • Evaluate a company's financial position including its cash flow, credit position and liquidity. • Understand the value chain and determine the distinctive competencies of an enterprise • Acquire basic skill in diagnosing human resource problems in organizations. • Acquire basic skill in conducting business negotiations • Understand the conceptual frameworks relating to leadership and organizational effectiveness; • Differentiate the hype and fad from substantive and meaningful knowledge of leadership and organizational effectiveness

Recommended preparation

No formal knowledge of business is assumed. This is designed to give you the basics so you can business and be successful in the first jobs or in the field of business.

Assignments will include such things as Problem sets in finance and accounting Quizzes in marketing and business law Written report for organizational, HRM and negotiations
