Astronomy for Scientists and Engineers

Introduction to astronomy for students in the physical sciences or engineering. Topics similar to 101, but the approach uses more mathematics and physics. Prerequisite: PHYS 123.

Class description

The course will give students an in-depth view of astronomical research in a number of specific areas that are of current special interest. Included are the following topics: extra-solar planetary systems, lunar exploration, Mars rover results, the rings of Saturn, the surface of Titan, galaxy evolution, stellar populations, dark matter, gamma-ray sources and others.

General method of instruction

Informal illustrated lectures and discussion.

Recommended preparation

Review of basic physics is recommended and readings in elementary astronomy will help in some areas.

Class assignments and grading

Two research-style reports, no problem sets.

Quality of reports.
