Literature and Culture of South Asia from Tradition to Modernity

Class description

The course provides an introduction to the medieval and modern literature of the Indian subcontinent. Students will read translations of poetry, novels and short stories written in South Asian vernacular languages, as well as in English. They will learn about themes, concepts, imagery, and literary devices common to the literature of the subcontinent and about distinctive features of regional literary traditions. The works will be studied in their literary, religious,historical, political, social, cultural and performative contexts.

Class assignments and grading

In addition to reading the literature, students will be asked to write answers to discussion questions and to write a term paper.

The grade will be based on a midterm examination (25%), final examination (25%), paper (30%), and answers to discussion questions and participation in discussions (20%).
