ART History and Criticism

Class description

Autumn 2013: From Painting to Environment: Schwitters, El Lissitzky, Mondrian -This class examines the work of three pioneers of abstract painting (and sculpture) who extended their practice into the built environment, often first by experimenting in their own studios. If you are not familiar with the work, simply google Schwitters Merzbau, Lissitzky Proun room, or Mondrian studio, to get a first glimpse of the kind of works we will examine. The work of a select group of contemporaries with similar concerns will also be examined.

Important: at least one course in art history, preferably the 203, 381 or 380 surveys, are recommended as background. Please contact the instructor for permission:

one paper (6-9 pages) and one exam
