Class description

Summer 2007, "The arts of New Guinea and Island Melanesia" Western artists have long had a fascination with the great Island of New Guinea and its many Melanesian neighbors. Pablo Picasso's studio included dramatic sculptures from the French colony of New Caledonia while Expressionist painters in Berlin and Vienna avidly collected art from German-controlled portions of the region. ART H 400 will explore this rich area of world art by examining Melanesian arts of the body, ritual paintings and sculpture, and dramatic festivals that blend dance, music and visual forms in spectacular displays. The course will conclude with a look at the work of contemporary Papuan artists and their role in a Post-Colonial Pacific.
