Art of Europe and the United States in the decades since World War II: painting, sculpture, and architecture, multiplication of new forms (video, performance pieces, land and installation pieces), changing context of patronage, publicity, and marketing.
Class description
Winter 2010 Familiarity with major artists, critical debates, new and established genres of contemporary visual arts, 1945-c. 2000, primarily in the US. Course does NOT cover architecture.
Student learning goals
identify work associated with major movements from abstract expressionism to current multimedia installations
analyze a wide range of critical debates about the work of individual artist and artists groups
critically assess the logic of contemporary art survey books

Large lecture
Recommended preparation
200-level art history course work, preferably Art History 203. Not recommended for students with NO background in Art History.
Class assignments and grading
Weekly reading assignments from class textbook and course packet.
Midterm, short paper (4-5 pages), quiz.
Other Comments and Information: No exams will be given except when scheduled for the entire class (exceptions only in cases of documented emergencies).
