Class description

This class will study the interface of modernity and realism through images of urban people and public spaces, with special attention paid to women in society in turn-of-the-twentieth-century Paris, London, and New York. By focusing on scenes of public leisure, popular entertainment, and daily life, we will address the behaviors and deportment of individual figures with respect to social class, gender issues, and other major descriptors to uncover the changing historical and social components revealed - and how these influenced or differed from one another within the realm of nineteenth-century Paris and London and New York in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
