Class description

Winter 2008: "Pioneers of Modern and Abstract Sculpture"

This course will examine modern and abstract sculpture from the late nineteenth century up to about World War II through such artists as Rodin, Brancusi, Picasso, Matisse, Arp, Vantongerloo, Gabo, Rodchenko, Moholy-Nagy, Kobro, Moore, Noguchi, and Giacometti.

General method of instruction

Lectures with discussion. Because discussion is an integral part of the course, class participation is vital to the success of the class as well as to your grade.

Recommended preparation

Preferred background (although no requirement): 203 (Survey of Western art--modern)

Class assignments and grading

Two exams and two papers.

Grading for the course will be based on the exams and two short papers. Exams will include slide identifications, compare and contrast questions, short essays, and discussion of "names and terms" from the weekly handouts.
